You’re looking at a European journalist and teacher who’s currently living in the USA. Crossing the Atlantic time and again, for many years I struggled with the question where I should make my permanent home.
Is Heimat a matter of the heart or of the mind? To my relief, I realized that there was no need to make a final determination. As a transatlantic nomad, all you need to do is periodically shift your base from East to West to East.
I currently live and work in Montana, but hope to spend many future summers in Berlin. I’ll continue to try and explain Europe to Americans, and America to Europeans – with an insider’s detachment, if you can imagine such a thing.
